Avian Influenza

What is Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) ?

Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, easily spreads among wild and domestic birds. Bird flu in humans is very rare in the United States.

Bird flu is a virus that can be fatal to birds. A low-pathogenic strain of the virus is common and causes few symptoms. The high-pathogenic strain can be fatal and have severe symptoms. Outbreaks of bird flu occur when the high-pathogenic strain is present.

There is not a cure for bird flu. When birds are infected with the high-pathogenic strain, it is usually always fatal. Once the virus is found in a flock, the entire flock is euthanized. This helps prevent the spread of bird flu to other birds.

Preventing Avian Flu

Avoiding close contact with infected birds or areas where inflected birds lived is the main prevention.

Bird flu among domestic poultry is often spread from an infected wild bird to a flock. Following biosecurity guidelines can help prevent transmission of bird flu. Hunters should always wear gloves and follow biosecurity guidelines when dressing their birds.
